Niort Court Hearing: Anti-Basin Activists Summoned for Prohibited Demonstration in Sainte-Soline

Anti-basin activists, union representatives of the CGT, the Solidaire union and the Peasant Confederation: they are 9 in total, to be summoned before the Niort court this Friday, September 8. Justice accuses them of having called to demonstrate during the last prohibited gatherings of Sainte-Soline. A mobilization in support of the defendants was organized in parallel with this hearing.

Among the nine men summoned, Julien Le Guet, figure of the anti-basins movement and spokesperson for the collective “Bassines Non Merci!”. At his side, other members of the collective, trade unionists and Basile Dutertre, member of the Uprisings of the Earth collective.

All are prosecuted for the organization of two demonstrations prohibited on the public highway: on October 29, 2022 at the start of the construction of the Sainte-Soline water reservoir, and five months later, on March 25, 2023, at the same place.

Remember, this day of mobilization against the mega-basins was marked by rare violence between demonstrators and police. More than an hour of confrontation at the Sainte-Soline basin, causing dozens of injuries on each side.

According to the organizers, more than 200 injured are recorded among the demonstrators, including three in absolute emergency. On the side of the police, 48 gendarmes are injured according to the prefecture.

On site, several thousand people: 6,000 according to the police, 20 to 30,000 according to the organizers. Faced with these demonstrators, mostly pacifists, an unusually large police force: twenty squadrons of armed mobile gendarmes, for some circulating on board quads, nine helicopters, four water cannons, and four armored vehicles.

According to a note from the gendarmerie, “400 to 500 experienced and ultra-violent ‘black blocks'” were also present in the procession of demonstrators.

Of the nine defendants, two of them, Julien Le Guet and Basile Dutertre, are also being prosecuted for “participation in a group formed to prepare violence against persons or damage to property“.

In parallel with this hearing scheduled for Friday, September 8 at 1:30 p.m., a mobilization in support of the defendants is organized from 10:30 a.m.

In addition, last Tuesday, the Deux-Sèvres prefecture issued an order prohibiting gatherings near the Niort court.

In order to guarantee the serenity of the judicial hearing and prevent any risk of disturbance to public order in front of the court and in the surroundings, the prefect of Deux-Sèvres has issued an order prohibiting demonstrations and gatherings. on a public road Friday, September 08, 2023 at 7 a.m. to Saturday, September 09, 2023 at 7 a.m. near the courthouse, is it specified.

A measure going against the freedom to come and go, and the collective freedom of expression of ideas and opinions according to the anti-basins. A summary against the closure of the city center of Niort was then filed. It was examined this Thursday, September 7 by the administrative court of Poitiers.

The decision rendered at the end of the day validates this order.
