Nintendo’s Director for Latin America on Banning Cheap Switch Games in Argentina

A few months ago, Nintendo fans were happy about the possibility of being able to buy Switch games by spending very few reais on the Argentine eShop. Some lucky people managed to secure Stardew Valley for R$ 2.95, Mortal Shell for R$ 18.81 and Dragon Ball FighterZ for R$16.58, for example. O Voxel had the opportunity to speak with Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s director for Latin America, who spoke about why the company banned the practice.

After a long time of players changing the console region and purchasing games at prices well below those charged in Brazil, Big N decided to stipulate new rules. Since mid-August 18, the “spree” has ended.

“This is a very complex local economic issue that is not even worth going into detail. Because we understand that the issue is far from what is common, we decided to only allow payments made with credit cards issued in the country itself”, argued the executive of the Japanese company during an interview at Brasil Game Show (BGS) 2023.

Without giving further details on the issue, van Zyll commented that fans can continue to take advantage of the Brazilian eShop itself to purchase hundreds of Nintendo Switch titles.

Argentina is experiencing a serious financial crisis and a historic devaluation of its currency (the peso). To give you an idea, this Thursday (12) one Brazilian real is equivalent to 69.35 pesos, while one Argentine peso is equivalent to 0.014 reais.

Games in PT-BR

The director of Nintendo is almost Brazilian. Knowledgeable about the local market and public, he makes a point of thanking the Nintendo fans in good Portuguese. He even comments that the warmth and receptivity of Brazilians are the country’s main differences.

Because of the increasingly strong relationship between Nintendo and Brazil, more and more Switch games are being localized for PT-BR. The list that already counted Mario Party Superstars, Mario Strikers: Battle League, Nintendo Switch Sports, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Kirby’s Dream Buffet, Pikmin 4 e F-ZERO 99now you will win Super Mario Bros. Wonder (which will be released on October 20th) and Princess Peach: Showtime! (March 22, 2024).

“This is very important work for us and we want to bring more and more games in Portuguese”, guarantees van Zyll.

Despite the desire to launch more titles in our language, the executive explains that there is no possibility for games already released to be adapted into Portuguese. He says that to do work of this type, it would be necessary to move the studios to work on the same project again, which is practically unfeasible.

“When the development of a game ends, all professionals start thinking about the next one. So this return to a past title ends up being impractical”, he says.

Bill van Zyll’s speech practically buries fans’ dreams of seeing games like Pokémon Legends Arceus, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in our language.

Nintendo and BGS 2023

BGS 2023 marks an absolute reign for Nintendo, as competitors PlayStation and Xbox are not participating in the fair. Big N’s stand is one of the largest at the entire event.

Among the activities, the biggest highlight is the possibility of testing in advance Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Anyone who has the courage to face the long queues will be able to enjoy around 10 minutes of gambling.
