Nintendo Switch Hardware Sales Reach 139.36 Million Units, OLED Model Most Popular

Nintendo has announced its quarterly financial results, revealing that the Nintendo Switch has sold a staggering 139.36 million units since its launch in March 2017. This is a significant increase from the 132.46 million units reported in November. The company has also raised its forecasts for both hardware sales and overall profit for the year, following a successful holiday season.

During a conference call after the release of the financial report, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the current model of the Switch would remain the company’s “main business” in 2024. He declined to comment on any plans for new hardware, leaving fans speculating about the possibility of a Switch 2.

Nintendo now predicts that it will sell an additional 15.5 million Switch units before the end of the fiscal year in March, along with 5 million more software units. Despite a 6% decrease in overall sales compared to the previous year, this decline was expected as the Switch enters its seventh year on the market. The system continues to exceed expectations and rumors of new Nintendo hardware continue to circulate.

The financial report also revealed positive news in other areas. Gross profit increased by 11.5% year-on-year, operating profit rose by 13.1%, and “mobile and IP related business” sales saw an impressive increase of 93.4%. This growth can be attributed to higher movie-related sales and increased royalty income.

When looking at the different Switch models, the OLED version proved to be the most popular. It saw an increase in sell-through total compared to the same period the previous year. The report states that there was demand not only for first-time purchases but also for additional and replacement purchases.

Furthermore, the number of users playing software on the Switch reached an all-time high of over 122 million in 2023. This demonstrates the continued popularity and engagement of the console’s user base.

In terms of overall hardware sales, the Nintendo Switch currently stands in second place with 139.36 million units sold. The DS holds the top spot with 154.02 million units sold. The Game Boy, Wii, and Game Boy Advance also feature prominently on the list.

Despite the ongoing success of the Nintendo Switch, fans and analysts are eagerly awaiting news about a potential successor. However, it seems that Nintendo is in no rush to make any announcements at this time.

The impressive sales figures and continued popularity of the Nintendo Switch showcase the enduring appeal of the console. With its diverse library of games and innovative features, the Switch has captured the hearts of millions of gamers worldwide. While it may not have surpassed the DS or PS2 in terms of hardware sales just yet, it certainly has a chance to climb higher on the sales chart.
