Nintendo Switch 2: Updated Details, Release Date, and Speculations

A few days ago, we wrote about new information regarding the next console from Nintendo, which VGC magazine came up with and which was subsequently confirmed by Eurogamer. VGC specifically claimed that the “Switch 2” would only bring an LCD display instead of OLED, but a higher storage capacity. At the same time, it was said that Nintendo’s partners already have devkits available and the console should be released in the second half of next year. From another source came news that the new Switch could be announced at Gamescom.

A leaker came up with more details about the upcoming device NateTheHate and his VGC information confirmed. We have now learned that the display should be 8 inches, which is a slight increase compared to previous models. The original Switch was 6.2 inches and the OLED model was 7 inches. At the same time, Nate confirms that the display should indeed use LCD technology, not OLED.

As for storage, it should be a really significant increase. While the original Switch had 32GB and the OLED model 64GB, the new console appears to be capped at 512GB. However, it is possible that Nintendo will release multiple variants with different capacities. However, we do not yet know whether the storage will be faster, or by how much.

A big question mark still hangs over backwards compatibility. Although the new console will probably not come with any revolutionary concept and will be more of an evolution of the Switch, the ability to play games from the previous device on the “Switch 2” is not at all certain. Nate does think that compatibility will be resolved, but we’re still waiting for definitive confirmation.

Unfortunately, we didn’t learn anything new about the chip used. Already two years ago there was talk of a SoC with a label T239, featuring GPUs built on the Ampere architecture. However, it was very likely the chip for the canceled Switch Pro, so it’s possible that the full-fledged successor will come with something even more powerful, potentially a Lovelace GPU with DLSS 3 support. But of course, it’s not certain.

Regarding the release, Nate adds that we should see the console by the end of 2024, specifically, most likely in September or October. The device is scheduled to go into production in the first quarter of next year.
