Nintendo Sues Tropic Haze for $2.4 Million: Yuzu Emulator Removed from Shelves

Nintendo announced earlier that it was suing Tropic Haze Switch emulator Yuzu. The matter progressed rapidly. Tropic Haze agreed to compensate Nintendo US$2.4 million (approximately HK$19 million) and remove the emulator involved from the shelves.

▲Nintendo sued Tropic Haze for mass infringement and piracy of Nintendo’s games. Tropic Haze paid US$2.4 million (approximately HK$19 million) in compensation.

Nintendo earlier filed a lawsuit with the Rhode Island Federal Court in the United States, accusing Tropic Haze’s Switch emulator Yuzu of mass infringement and piracy of Nintendo’s games with full knowledge of the emulator. Nintendo alleges that Tropic Haze violates the anti-circumvention and anti-trafficking provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Yuzu was launched in 2018 and is officially operated as an open source. Users can use it for free on Windows, Linux and Android platforms. Nintendo stated: “Without Yuzu’s decryption technology for Nintendo’s encryption scheme, unauthorized copies of the game would not be able to run on a PC or Android device.”

Tropic Haze said in an official statement that it has always opposed piracy and developed the emulator Yuzu “in good faith and out of passion for Nintendo.” Tropic Haze will terminate the download and development of the Yuzu emulator, delete cracking tools and keys, and hand over related hardware and website domain names.
