Nintendo president talks about the future of cloud gaming – news

What will the gaming market look like in ten years? With the emergence of cloud gaming and the rise of dematerialization, it is difficult to answer this question. But for the president of Nintendo, traditional consoles still have a bright future ahead of them.

Japanese business daily Nikkei was able to speak with Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo. The opportunity to question him on the relevance of a dedicated console such as the Nintendo Switch in the face of the emergence of cloud gaming, which makes it possible to overcome material constraints while avoiding having to pay for a console. Here is his answer:

It is possible that cloud gaming will capture the interest of the public within ten years, but at present, I do not think that dedicated consoles are doomed to disappear. There is still a long way to go to see the result. That said, it would be a shame to focus only on ways to play that you can only have on dedicated consoles. When your audience starts to say that they can play on other consoles or on smartphones instead, you’re done!

In the past, Nintendo has already made attempts with cloud gaming, in particular by allowing Japanese players to play Resident Evil 7 or even to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on Switch. Also questioned about augmented reality, Furukawa made it clear that the company does not turn its back on new technologies:

We are continuously doing research and development. Our hardware development teams assess all kinds of new technologies and discuss the subject with the developers in charge of the games. If they determine that a technology can be used with a game, then they will use it. In the future, we will not change this fundamental approach.
