Nintendo finally apologizes for the problems encountered

Prosecuted in the United States and Threatened with an Action in France, Nintendo, by the Voice of its President, Made Its First Official Apologies to Players for the Joy-Con Drift Affair uncontrollable encountered by his Nintendo Switch.

Since the release of the Nintendo Switch in 2017, it has become the nightmare of many players: the console controller suddenly does nothing but his head and follows unrequested actions. What make competitors of Mario Kart or Smash Bros hysterical when the Joy-Con no longer responds to the requested movements.

First answer: go to the after-sales service!

Called “Joy-Con drift”, this problem had angered millions of users around the world, giving rise to numerous legal actions. In the United States in particular, a class action had been filed in 2019, also including the Switch Lite, which however does not have detachable joysticks, but which also has hardware problems with controls.

The American action in particular had forced Nintendo to react, without proposing solutions to players except to exchange their Joy-Con if they were still under warranty (2 years). For the others, apart from buying a pair of controllers or sending theirs to Nintendo’s after-sales service (around 50 euros for repairs).

« We are aware of recent reports that some Joy-Con controllers are not responding properly. We want our consumers to have fun with Nintendo Switch ”, Nintendo had then declared, recognizing the beginning of a problem. But it was the end of the press release which irritated the players: “If something does not achieve this goal, we always encourage them to visit support so that we can help.”

Apologies, but no solution

It had not been enough to calm the spirits and the sling continued. According to Kotaku, Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of the Japanese company, eventually stepped up to the plate. In a question and answer session, the big N big man recognized the problem and apologized to the users, the video game giant’s first official apologies.

Regarding the Joy-Con, we apologize for any problems caused to our customers. We are still aiming to improve our products, but as the Joy-Con is the subject of a class action lawsuit in the United States and this is still an outstanding problem, we would like to refrain from enter into the details of the actions carried out.

Still no solution proposed by Nintendo, but a first gesture towards disgruntled players on the part of President Furukawa in person. In the United States, the action is still underway and it is not certain that the words are enough to extinguish it.

In France, the UFC-Que Choisir has put Nintendo on notice to replace or repair the controllers for free for the Switch, calling the problem “planned obsolescence”. In January, the president of Nintendo France, Philippe Lavoué, had recognized with the World the problems encountered by the Switch, but that the number of cases in France was “extremely weak. ” He added that the replacement would be “even if the commercial warranty has expired ”.
