Nineteen schoolchildren and two adults died in a car accident in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. The students, aged between five and 12, were sitting in the open back of a pickup truck when the vehicle collided with a truck. The photos show that there is practically nothing left of the pickup truck.

The children were on their way home from school. Transportation in a flatbed, or “bakkie” as it is locally called, is cheap and popular.

The interim prime minister of KwaZulu-Natal expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced an investigation into the cause of this “traumatizing incident”, reports the South African news site Independent online.
