Nine ET5 – New Tesla challenger gets range of over 100 miles

(Elbil24): Nine have settled in Norway in record time, including the country’s heaviest showroom, between the Grand Hotel and the castle of Karl Johan himself. The only car they currently have in the range in this country is the SUV ES8, a large case with plenty of space.

Now they have unveiled their next contribution, the ET5 sedan.

During Nine Day 2021 – held in China – they unveiled a new car that will also find its way to the Norwegian market. ET5 is a medium-sized sedan, naturally smaller than previously shown ET7, and will go straight to war with Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, Polestar 2 and their like.

Efficiency against space

Sedan has never been a big deal in Norway, but Tesla turned something around in this with Model S and then Model 3. Whether this persists now that the more SUV-oriented Model Y has come on the market remains to be seen.

One reason that sedans will still be with us among electric cars is that it is far easier to create an aerodynamic sedan – in other words an efficient car – than, for example, an SUV, which the majority wants.

For this reason, sedans are also very similar in shape, because the optimal shape for low air resistance is created by the physics, not by car designers. The design of the ET5 thus gives a value for air resistance of 0.24.

In other words, it is the buyer who has to choose the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a body. The ET5 is a car of 4.7 meters anyway, and will probably offer a decent functionality for most people anyway. For how often do you strictly fill the trunk of the roof of an SUV?

The details

The car must be composed of, among other things, recycled materials on the inside, which has become a recurring theme among all car manufacturers in recent times. It also has a large panoramic glass roof, with the advantages and disadvantages of this. It lets in a lot of light all year round, but also some heat in the summer, in addition to insulating poorly from the cold in the winter.

An interesting detail is that Nio has now received Dolby Atmos in the sound system.

We have heard this demonstrated in cars before, and were simply powerfully impressed. Now we have not heard the electronics and speakers in ET5, so it remains to be seen if Nio utilizes the potential to the full.

By the way, have you seen this one?

Nio also points out that together with NREAL they have developed a system where AR glasses can project a screen of a full 201 inches, but here we fall off a bit, because then we are hopefully talking about the passengers – not the driver.

So to the vital for ET5 as an electric car. With two electric motors and four-wheel drive, the ET5 will make the sprint to 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds. This from an electric motor at the front at 204 horsepower, and one at 286 horses at the rear. The total torque is stated to be 700 Nm.

In addition to a fast sprint, it must be able to brake from 100 km / h to a standstill again at 33.9 meters. Electric cars are known to be heavy, which works in the opposite direction of short braking distances.

New Tesla challenger gets a range of over 100 miles

Over 100 miles with new battery

ET5 will be available with two alternative battery packs, of either 75 kWh or 100 kWh. Now, none of these versions have run through the WLTP tests, but the Chinese measurement standards refer to 55 and 70 miles range, respectively.

With the upcoming battery of 150 kWh, it will be able to roll over 100 miles, if we are to believe Nio.

Nine call the three alternative batteries Standard Range, Long Range and Ultra Long Range. Regardless of which one you choose, they are available in nine alternative colors. When the cars arrive, however, is a little more vague.

The car is now shown during Nio Day, but first ET7 will be on the market, and there the order books will open on January 20, with deliveries from March 28 – in China. This means that Europe will apparently only get the car for a while later in 2022, and it is questionable whether we will see anything for ET5 before the beginning of 2023.

If this is Nio quite silent, then this should be said to be our own estimates. When it comes to prices, we will of course return to it as soon as we get them from Nio.

Probably Nio will look at the competitors, and lay on about the same.
