“I don’t believe meat is bad for you, but it’s more about quantity and quality meat that we consume, “said Carrie Gabriel, MS, RDN, as quoted from Bustle.
“In general, a portion of meat should be the size of the palm of your hand, which is about three ounces. But most people today don’t pay attention to the portions they consume, especially in restaurants, in large portions,” he continued.
To make sure you don’t eat too much meat, pay attention to the bad effects of eating too much meat.
1. Dehydration
One study from the University of Connecticut found that a diet high in protein can cause the kidneys to produce more concentrated urine, leading to dehydration. This can affect everything from energy levels, to your skin, to increased appetite and muscle cramps, according to Everyday Health.
2. Body Odor
Body odor? You may be eating too much meat. “A study from the Journal of Chemical Senses found that people who ate a non-meat diet had a significantly better body odor, when compared to the body odor of meat-eaters.”
3. Constipation
“Eating lots of meat as a substitute for carbohydrates can cause constipation, because meat does not contain fiber,” says Jenn LaVardera, MS RD. To reduce constipation, reduce your intake of meat and increase your intake of complex carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables.
4. Headache
It’s no surprise that meat can cause headaches. Eating too much meat can cause dehydration. “Also, carbohydrates are fuel for the brain, so when we eat a lot of meat and not enough carbs, this can cause headaches,” says LaVardera.
