Nîmes: the return of the Trisha Brown company, a legend of contemporary dance

The American dancers will be on stage at the Bernadette-Lafont theater in Nîmes for two evenings but also at the Jardins de la Fontaine for two free outdoor performances.

At the start of the season, the Nîmes theater paid homage to American dance legend Anna Halprin. It ends with another figure. The Trisha Brown Dance Company continues its transmission of the work of the leading choreographer of modern dance, who died in 2017. She comes to present three pieces during two evenings on the stage of the Bernadette-Lafont theater, then frees herself from the sets to two outdoor performances.

From the 1960s, Trisha Brown belonged to the New York avant-garde, taking part in the first experiences of the mythical Judson theater. The pieces chosen for the shows on Thursday and Friday illustrate this work, made up of relationships and exchanges with musicians, painters, visual artists, performers all committed to a desire to bring art out of the usual frameworks, museums , theaters and institutional venues.

The evenings begin with “Watermotor”, a short solo from 1978 on a free and dense rhythm, requiring total commitment. Then place “Glacial Decoy”, first collaboration with the visual artist Robert Rauschenberg in 1979. The five dancers, perfect doubles, perform in unison, in canon or in individual score, breakaways to the sound of slide clicks, projected behind. Finally, “Astral Converted”, a piece for nine dancers from 1991, which unfolds to music by John Cage to explore the relationship to the ground.

On Saturday, the company continues its exploration of the exchanges between art and life in the Jardins de la Fontaine, with the “In Plain Site” project. By reducing the distances with the public, the dancers select pieces from the repertoire by multiplying the points of view and establishing a resonance with the spirit of the place.

Shows Thursday June 9 and Friday June 10, 8 p.m. Bernadette-Lafont theatre, place de la Calade, Nîmes. From €11 to €32.

“In Plain Site”, Saturday 11 June, 5.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Jardins de la Fontaine, Nîmes. Free. 04 66 36 65 10.
