Nîmes: deliberated on May 3 for the squatters of rue Pierre-Semard

The summary judge should give his answer on May 3 in the case of squatters on rue Pierre-Semard in Nîmes. LCF Novedis’ lawyer calls for the expulsion of these families, children and the elderly (around sixty people), mostly from Eastern Europe. These families, supported by the Dal (Right to Housing) have occupied the premises since September 2019. Originally, railway workers lived in these SNCF apartments. These dwellings were then abandoned. LCF Novedis, the real estate subsidiary of SNCF, requested provisional compensation of 7,000 euros per month. Me Aline Jolivet, the lawyer for the occupants and the Dal recalled the state of necessity, the health context and contested the demands of LCF Novedis.

Supported by the Dal (Right to Housing), families (sixty people), mainly from Eastern Europe, have been occupying apartments at 95 and 93 rue Pierre-Semard in Nîmes since September 2019. The building originally intended for railway workers has been abandoned for years. While awaiting a residence permit or a right of asylum, these couples, babies, school children, the elderly or the sick were cited on Monday, in summary proceedings, before the judge of the judicial court. LCF Novedis’ lawyer asked for their expulsion and provisional compensation of around 7,000 euros per month.

“There is no assault; these places were abandoned and dilapidated”, before associations and families invest the places, clean them and restore them, recalled Me Aline Jolivet, the lawyer of these families and Dal. According to Me Jolivet, the plan to purchase the site by the City of Nîmes put forward by LCF Novedis, “is not serious”. She challenged the need for an eviction and asked for a delay for these families to find solutions. The court will rule on May 3.
