What is it

The Nile fever virus (Virus del Nilo) is a flavivirus that can cause fever, headache, muscle pain and fatigue. In severe cases it can lead to inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), which can result in paralysis or death.

The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, which contract the virus by biting infected birds. People can become infected through a mosquito bite, or through contact with the blood or cerebrospinal fluid of an infected person. The mosquitoes that transmit the Nile fever virus are active from June to October.

The symptoms of Nile fever usually begin within 3 to 15 days after infection. Most people who become infected with the virus have no symptoms or experience mild symptoms that go away within a few days.

The Nile fever virus occurs in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. The virus was first discovered in Spain in 2004. Since then, about 200 cases of Nile fever have been reported in Spain, of which about 10% are fatal. There is no specific treatment for Nile fever. Treatment is symptomatic and consists of relieving fever, headache and pain.
