While the “Alphanews” news site announced that the Greek Cypriot side answered “yes” to the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding the name of the representative, the President of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Nikos Hristodulidis, said in his statement that following the announcement of the person chosen by the UN Secretary-General, He said they were ready to start negotiations immediately.
In parallel with this, Hristodulidis stated in his statement that he thought that the representative would visit Cyprus with the new year, right after the UN Secretary-General’s statement on the issue.
Answering the questions of journalists within the framework of an opening held in Paphos today, Hristodulidis stated that they had a phone conversation with Guterres last night and that the name chosen by Guterres was also referred to during the call.
WORDS FULL OF PRAISE FROM GUTERRES TO THE PERSON HE WANTS TO APPOINT
In his statement, Hristodulidis stated that the Greek Cypriot side has officially approved the representative, and that Guterres spoke with very complimentary words about the person and his abilities that he intended to announce.
Noting that he expressed his readiness for the negotiations to start immediately, Hristodulidis argued that he thought that if there was political will, they could restart the negotiations from where they left off.
HRISTODULIDIS HAS NO KNOWLEDGE ABOUT WHEN THE REPRESENTATIVE WILL ARRIVE
In response to the question about when the representative will come to Cyprus, the Greek leader said that the UN Secretary General did not inform him about a concrete date, and reiterated that he thought the representative would visit Cyprus in the new year, right after the UN Secretary General’s statement.
Stating that they discussed the issue of humanitarian corridor to Gaza with Guterres, Hristodulidis stated that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis informed him about Turkish-Greek issues immediately after the completion of his meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Athens.
“I AM SATISFIED WITH WHAT I HEAR FROM MİÇOTAKIS”
Hristodulidis stated that he could not share with the public what Mitsotakis said to him, but that a positive momentum appeared to be forming, and that he was pleased with what he heard from Mitsotakis.
Hristodulidis added that he and Mitsotakis will meet privately in Brussels next week, where they will have the opportunity to be informed in more detail and more specifically.
Guterres’ new Representative in Cyprus is expected to be Colombia’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.
