The processes for the European elections are intense in all the political groups of the European Parliament, in which the MEPs gather. At this stage, their internal procedures for the nomination of their so-called “top candidate” as President of the European Commission are also underway. In the Party of the European Left, their candidate has already been chosen, while in the Eurosocialists, the procedures are ongoing. They follow different political paths but the concern is widespread given that across Europe popular discontent against the austerity imposed by governments and EU policies is growing.
The president of PASOK-KINAL is preparing his bags Nikos Androulakis for Italy, where the Electoral Congress of the Party of European Socialists (PES) will take place on March 2, 2024. Delegates at the Congress will elect the common candidate (spitzenkandidat) for the June 2024 European elections and adopt the PES election manifesto. As part of the Electoral Conference, which will be held in Rome, a meeting of leaders and a meeting of the PES Presidency will be organized. The choice of Rome, the city where the treaties (European Economic Community – EEC and European Atomic Energy Community – EURATOM) were signed in 1957, which were the harbinger of the EU, is no coincidence.
However, at the PES Electoral Congress in Rome, the candidacy of Luxembourg Social Democrat Nicolas Schmitt, who is Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights, and has already secured broad support from PES members to be elected as PES’s joint candidate for President of the European Commission.
In view of the European elections, the Eurosocialists believe that the most important thing at this time is to have a shield against the extreme right. As PES president and former Prime Minister of Sweden Stefan Leven recently pointed out, “we will meet in Rome at a critical moment, both at the European and national level. We cannot ignore how the far right is becoming more confident and visible. Across Europe we see them rising in the polls. We must not return to Europe’s dark past. In Rome, we face this threat to Europe. We make it clear that our family offers a progressive alternative.”
The candidacy of Nicolas Schmitt was supported by, among others PASOK-KINAL. The parties and organizations that officially supported him as joint candidate of PES are: SPÖ Austria, PS Belgium, Vooruit Belgium, SDP Croatia, SDP Finland, PS France, SPD Germany, PASOK Greece, MSZP Hungary, DK Hungary, PD Italy, PSI Italy , Saskana Latvia, LSAP Luxembourg, PvdA Netherlands, Lewica Poland, PS Portugal, PSD Romania, PSOE Spain, SAP Sweden, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats S&D in the European Parliament , PES Group in the European Committee of the Regions, PES Women, Young Europeans Socialists (Young European Socialists -YES), Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS).
There were also processes in the parties of the Left. It is noteworthy that the main candidate of the Party of the European Left ( Party of the European Left ) was already presented during the electoral General Assembly of the party on February 24-25, 2024 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The Austrian Walter Bayer was chosen by the Party of the European Left as the leading candidate. Former president of the European Left think tank, ‘transform! Europe network”, Walter Bayer, on the occasion of the European elections, had pointed out that the forging of social alliances should be sought with a focus on issues of protection of socially vulnerable groups, accuracy, shelter, peace and the development of democratic struggles against fascism.
Ten years have passed since, for the 2014 European elections, the Party of the European Left at its 4th Congress (December 13-15, 2013) in Madrid chose the then president of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, as the leading candidate for the presidency. European Commission. With slogans against neo-liberalism and the austerity imposed by the Troika and the dominant powers in the EU, the Greek politician Alexis Tsipras, who a little later would become the Prime Minister of Greece, was resoundingly introduced to the European political scene, the first to come from a Leftist party in our country. .
The Party of the European Left, to which SYRIZA-PS is a member, has today high on the agenda of the European elections the issues of accuracy, the reduction of social inequalities and the creation of a front against the extreme right.
