Nikon has announced a notable upgrade for its popular full-frame cameras, delivering enhanced video capabilities and seamless cloud integration. The update includes a video-centric firmware upgrade for the flagship Z9 camera and, importantly, the long-awaited Frame.io integration via the NX MobileAir app for the Z9,Z8,and Z6 III models.
The Nikon Z9, launched in 2021, receives firmware version 5.10, a major update focused on improving the video recording experiance. This update introduces a new shutter mode allowing users to precisely control the shutter angle in 15 steps, ranging from 6.5 to 360 degrees. This eliminates the need to adjust shutter speed with every frame rate change, providing greater control over motion blur.
further enhancing video control, version 5.10 allows for customization of the zebra pattern display, including colour, openness, and position. Users can also adjust the size and placement of brightness information displays, such as the histogram and waveform monitors. ”These capabilities were incorporated to make video recording easier by allowing the user to confirm appropriate exposure, even when recording high-contrast scenes,” Nikon stated.
Nikon is also delivering on its promise made at Adobe MAX last October: Frame.io integration. This feature, initially slated for a 2025 rollout, is now available, albeit with a caveat. The initial release supports Android devices only, with iOS support “currently underway.” This integration allows for streamlined workflow, enabling photographers to upload video files directly to Frame.io for easy sharing and collaboration.
The updated NX MobileAir app for android offers both manual and automatic upload options.users can also filter video files by rating and file format before uploading. Nikon highlights the efficiency of this new workflow: “Support for Frame.io will provide a more efficient workflow by seamlessly connecting the entire video production process, from recording to final delivery. This feature is especially useful when speed is of the essence, such as with live event social media creation as well as news and sports reporting,” the company added.
It’s critically important to note that Frame.io integration through the NX MobileAir app is currently limited to the Z9, Z8, and Z6 III cameras.
These updates represent a significant step forward for Nikon’s video capabilities, offering professional photographers and videographers enhanced control and streamlined workflows. The addition of Frame.io integration, while initially limited to Android, promises to revolutionize post-production for many users.
Nikon Supercharges Video Capabilities with Z9 Firmware Update and Frame.io Integration
Nikon has just made a major announcement for video professionals using its popular Z series cameras. It allows for much more nuanced control over the look and feel of the footage.
Senior Editor: And what about the other video-centric improvements?
Michael Jacobs: Nikon has clearly listened to feedback from professionals. The ability to customize the zebra pattern display is a welcome addition. Being able to tailor its color, openness, and position, along with the customization options for histograms and waveform monitors, makes it so much easier to accurately judge exposure, even in challenging high-contrast scenes.

Integrating it directly into the NX MobileAir app for the Z9, Z8, and Z6 III allows photographers and videographers to upload video files directly to Frame.io from their cameras. This eliminates the need for time-consuming downloads and transfers, streamlining the entire post-production workflow significantly.
Senior Editor: We understand this integration is currently limited to Android devices.
Michael jacobs: That’s right. while the initial release is Android-only, Nikon has confirmed that iOS support is “currently underway.” This is a major step towards a truly seamless workflow for all Nikon users.

Michael Jacobs: Absolutely. It’s not just about convenience. The ability to share and collaborate on video projects in real-time,directly from the camera, opens up exciting possibilities for remote shooting and collaborative workflows. Think live event coverage, breaking news, or even documentaries where multiple shooters are contributing footage. This is a major leap forward for Nikon and the industry as a whole.
