Freiburg (AP) – When the spontaneous Freiburg party in the modern catacombs of the stadium was still in full swing, Niko Kovac already took a seat on the press podium – alone and without his colleague Christian Streich. After the 2-0 defeat on Friday evening, the sobering coach of VfL Wolfsburg had to comment on a huge step backwards in the fight for Europe – he not only protected his team. “We didn’t manage to get up. We rarely managed to resist defeat throughout the season. We deserved to lose,” said Kovac after Christian Günter and Nils Petersen conceded.
