– We had plans for a debate after the Iowa primary, but we were aware that this would depend on the candidates and the results there, says a spokesperson for the ABC channel, which was to hold the debate.

The next state out in the primary is New Hampshire, on January 23. Here, it is expected that many independent voters will go for Haley.

In connection with that, ABC was to hold a debate on Thursday this week between the candidates fighting for the votes in the state.

It will therefore now be cancelled, after neither Nikki Haley nor Donald Trump will participate.

The electoral system in the United States

  • The United States holds presidential elections every four years, and the president can serve a maximum of two terms. The next election is in November 2024.
  • The Republicans and Democrats choose their candidate for the presidential election itself. Incumbent president, Democrat Joe Biden, is running for re-election.
  • The President of the United States is not elected directly by the people, but by 538 electors appointed by the 50 states and the capital, Washington.
  • The electors must initially vote for the candidate who gets the most support among the voters in the state the electors belong to.
  • The number of electors is unevenly distributed between the states by size, and some states are therefore more decisive than others.
  • The electoral system makes it possible to win the presidential election without having the most votes on a national basis, provided that you win in the right states.

Sea view

– We have had four good debates in this campaign. Unfortunately, Donald Trump has dropped all four. He has no more places to hide. The next debate I do will either be with Donald Trump, or with Joe Biden. I look forward.

That’s what the hopeful presidential candidate Nikki Haley said on Tuesday, after she finished third in the campaign’s first primary in Iowa, right behind Ron DeSantis – and far behind former President Donald Trump.

However, Trump has no plans to participate in any debate. In the past, he has said that he doesn’t see the point: Everyone knows who he is already, and he leads by a large margin in all opinion polls.

However, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who came in second in Iowa, was ready for the debate stage. So was former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, before he withdrew from the campaign last week. On Tuesday, Vivek Ramaswamy and Asa Hutchison also withdrew from the race to become the Republicans’ next presidential candidate.

DeSantis has come out hard against Haley’s debate refusal.

– She is afraid to debate because she does not want to answer the difficult questions. In reality, she is not trying to be a presidential candidate, but to be Trump’s vice president, he writes on X, formerly Twitter.
