Níjar closed 2021 with 22 shoots and more than 57 days of recordingwhich update the historical condition of being a land of cinema between the 50s and 80s when different spaces in its municipal district, the largest in the province, hosted hundreds of films and the Los Albaricoques district of Nijar hosted the birth of the ‘ Spaghetti western’, a cult film genre with its epicenter in Almería in the 1960s.
TV series, video clips, commercials and movies both national and international opted for Níjar for their locations in 2021. The third season of the series ‘Sky Rojo’, produced by Vancouver Media for Netflix, and the producers of ‘Jaguar’, a Nazi hunting series, opted for the brightness of the Almeria sky and shot scenes on Nijar soil.
A very cinematic past
The apricots It is the nijareña neighborhood of the west par excellence. The seventh art has also set its eyes on the Nijareño coast and scenes have been recorded on the emblematic beaches of Genoveses and Mónsul. In the first, the cameras immortalized ‘Rum Boulevard’ (1971) and ‘Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger’ (1977). And that of Mónsul has served as a natural film set in many movie scenes. ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’(1989), with one of the most remembered scenes, when Sean Connery frightens away the seagulls to shoot down a Nazi plane, is part of this same list. David Bisbal shot in Mónsul the video clip for his first single in his career, ‘Ave María’. On nearby beaches such as Cala Carbón they also shot ‘El Niño’ (2014), ‘Imagining Argentina’ (2003) and ‘Año Mariano’ (2000).
The Junta de Andalucía has pointed to a site of 507,586 square meters, between Villa de Níjar and Campohermoso, as the place that the team of engineers, architects and installation experts would have chosen to locate the future Andalusian City of Cinema, after having “outscored the other two opponents”.
The nijareño consistory has made it clear his commitment to the City of Cinema “as a catalyst for a tourism sector that helps us to ensure that this summer occupation continues throughout the year” as declared by its mayor, Esperanza Pérez Felices. The Municipal Corporation of Nijar, meeting in May 2021, made the decision to abolish film shooting fees of the fiscal ordinance that regulates the occupation and use of local public domain assets.
The producers who choose the Nijareño municipality, made up of 600 kilometers in length, to make their film recordings or advertising spots, things being this way, have exempted from paying any fee. This tax reduction is also accompanied by a more agile administrative procedure in the processing of these files.
