◆ 70% are in their teens and twenties… Cannabis is spreading among young people

Suspicions of illegal drugs surfaced at Nihon University’s American football club, which is a powerhouse in American football. Two members of the Tokyo University of Agriculture boxing club were just arrested in July by the Metropolitan Police Department. Cannabis is actually spreading among young people, and a senior police official said, “There is a fear of harming others due to hallucinations and hallucinations. Never get involved.”

On the afternoon of the 3rd, about 20 investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department searched the dormitory of the Nihon University American Football Club in Nakano, Tokyo for five hours. A 12-year-old first-year junior high school boy who lives nearby said, “I was rooting for you… I’m sorry because I think drugs are a bad thing.” A 21-year-old third-year male student at the university said, “If the allegations are true, you should receive appropriate punishment.”

Revelation of cannabis possession is conspicuous in the student sports world. Last month, in addition to two 19-year-old men who were members of the Tokyo University of Agriculture boxing club, a former rugby club member of Kyoto Seiaki High School was also arrested. At Nihon University, a rugby club member was arrested in 2020.

A senior Metropolitan Police Department official points out that cannabis is not limited to the student sports world.

According to the National Police Agency, a total of 5,342 people nationwide were caught in marijuana cases last year. About 70% of them were in their teens and twenties (3765 people). This is a significant increase from about 50% five years ago.

When police across the country were asked last fall about the motives for using cannabis for the first time among those under the age of 20, about 60% answered that they were out of curiosity or curiosity.

A senior police officer said, “Cannabis has been legalized in some countries, and there is a false perception among young people that it is ‘not dangerous.’ It’s a factor,” he said. He stressed, “Never get involved,” because not only is there the possibility of harming others through hallucinations and hallucinations, but there is also the risk of getting involved in accidents and troubles yourself.
