A study in the authoritative Lancet.

Scientists from Birmingham City Hospital, USA, conducted a study in which they found that nightmares may indicate the development of depression. An article about this appeared in The Lancet.

It was previously known that nightmares predict depression in patients with Parkinson’s disease, but now researchers have shown that this also happens in healthy people.

Experts tested cognitive abilities over time in 605 people, whose average age was 50 years. Another 2,600 people aged 79 and over were also surveyed. The study found a link between nightmares and poorer performance. This was particularly evident among men.

Screening for disturbing dreams may help identify people at risk of dementia and may support early prevention strategies

Scientists who conducted the study

Middle-aged people who suffer from nightmares have a greater risk of developing depression compared to those who do not wake up with nightmares. The elderly are also at risk – the chance of developing dementia doubles.
