The reigning Swedish champions had a dream start to the game and Joseph Ceesay scored 1-0 in the sixth minute after a brilliant goal.
The hosts equalized shortly thereafter, but after just under an hour, MFF strengthened their hold again when Isaac Kiese Thelin scored the 2-1 with a well-placed shot on the goalkeeper’s left post.
But the joy was short-lived.
In the 69th minute, team captain Teddy Teuma scored the equalizer from distance and Union SG got excited. Just two minutes later, the winning goal, 3-2, was from Victor Boniface.
– They manage to have two chances where we can’t get them. There’s not much more to say about the two goals, Ceesay tells SVT Sport.
“We deserve more”
– It’s disappointing, of course. We play a good trip and lead the game 2-1. We deserve more than what we get today. I don’t know what happened, they did two good deeds, but we should do better, Isaac Kiese Thelin tells Viaplay.
MFF’s best chance to equalize came from a free kick in the 89th minute, when Sören Rieks found Jo Inge Berget throwing himself forward and nodding just over the crossbar.
Malmö are now the last in Group D with two straight losses, having lost 0-2 at home to Braga last week.
– It’s heavy right now, says Kiese Thelin.
