Nightclubs in Oslo are now announcing higher age limits. The background is a judgment from the Oslo district court which states that it is not illegal to operate with a 23-year-old limit.

Last year, several nightclubs had to lower their age limits, after being accused of age discrimination. Now a judgment in the Oslo district court states that age limits are not illegal age discrimination.

– The age limit is necessary and not disproportionate, the judgment states.

The deadline for appealing the verdict is 20 November.

It was the nightclub “Festiviteten” in Hamar that took the case to court, and was fully successful.

Oslo clubs raise the age limit

A ring round Aftenposten have carried out, shows that several pubs want to increase the age limits following the decision in the district court.

– The reason is that we want an older clientele, says Fridjof Bade, co-owner of the Sult group, which owns S4.

They own BA3, Libertine, F6, Michaels, IVY, Justisen, Oslo Event Hub, Nedre Løkka and Byens Tak.

These outdoor venues retain the 20-year limit

Aftenposten’s round of calls also reveals that some nightclubs retain the 20-year limit. The outings Louise and Oslo Street Food themselves had to lower the age limit earlier.

The popular nightspots currently plan to keep the current age limit.

– We don’t want to jump in right away. We are keeping it low now and watching, says general manager Cecilie Skundberg Frostad at Oslo Street Food, to Aftenposten.
