Nightclub “Select” Under Close Surveillance in Montpellier: Residents Speak Out Against Noise and Disturbance

A nightclub is placed under close surveillance in Montpellier. For a year, regulars of the “Select” Tournezy district makes life hell for some residents. Noise, drugs, alcohol bottles or laughing gas canisters thrown on the ground, many residents do not feel safe.

From the top of their balcony, Sama and her daughter Séfara have a direct view of this former hookah bar which has become a nightclub. And for a year, they have been going through hell: “people break everything because they are completely drunk, regrets Sama. They urinate on the neighbor’s wall next door, they break into cars, too. Before, we left them open, now we no longer do that. There, it’s a big mess when the box is opened.”

Closed in August and September

Besides, the establishment was closed in August and September 2023 by the prefecture for noise pollution. Fatima notes that the problem arises especially in summer: “We have to open the windows in the summer to ventilate, but as a result, we hear noise outside. Until three or four in the morning, people scream and scream.”

Some traders have decided to go further, like Pierre-Alain who works in a printing shop next door: “on a signed a petition because every weekend, it’s loud sound, alcohol and drugs. It’s a mess in the parking lot everywhere. Summer is always party time. People complain because they can’t sleep.”

Work to limit noise

Does the nightclub have some responsibility? “For me no, since we do not sell nitrous oxide within the establishment, answers Olivier, who works at Select. The municipal and national police come by 50 times in the evening, but when it’s closing time and it starts to get really noisy, there’s no one there. It is not our role to intervene on public roads. It would be nice if the police were there a little more often.”

Since then, work has been carried out to limit noise pollution : “we changed four doors, which are insulated to less than 40 decibels. We insulated the exterior walls to limit vibrations. There is also a large security team. We try to ensure that people evacuate the street quickly , but we can’t be everywhere either.”

For his part, the town hall indicates that it remains vigilant and that the establishment is particularly monitored.
