Night School Studio becomes Netflix’s premier video game studio

But keep working on Oxenfree 2

This is the kind of unexpected news that can hit the industry at any moment: after having clearly mentioned intentions to get into video games last year, Netflix has just acquired Night School Studio, as announced by the Californian studio. on his site :

Over the past few months, we’ve had countless thoughtful discussions about our respective visions for games, storytelling, and our collective opportunity to make a positive impact somewhere in the middle. Night School wants to expand our narrative and design aspirations through distinctive and original games with heart. Netflix offers film, television and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver great entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations into narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting various storytellers were a natural fit then. It was as if both teams had come to this conclusion instinctively.

After the bows, Sean Krankel from Night School Studio reflects on the fact that Night School is still the first video game studio to be wholly owned by Netflix, which represents a significant first step for the SVOD giant in the video game industry:

Of course, it’s a surreal honor to be the first game studio to join Netflix! Not only can we keep doing what we do, the way we love to do, but we get a # 1 spot on the world’s largest entertainment platform. The Netflix team have taken great care to protect our studio culture and our creative vision.

With Oxenfree then Afterparty, Night School Studio has confirmed to be a maker original adventures of outstanding characters. It’s no wonder that Netflix considered this studio to be first redemption. Indeed, the American net giant has confirmed in his own press release that other acquisitions are to be expected, in order to strengthen its future video game offer which will be included in video on demand subscription.

Access to video games through Netflix is already in the test phase in some European countries, but for the moment is content to reissue promotional titles released on mobile devices, like official games Stranger Things. No later than this weekend, Netflix announced an action video game adapted from the feature film Kate, developped by Ludic Studios. No doubt the title looks a lot like Akane.

For the time being, ni Netflix ni Night School did not address the common projects that will result from this acquisition, but the studio has confirmed that it will not abandon development d’Oxenfree II: Lost Signals however. As a reminder, this sequel to the award-winning narrative game was announced last April during a Nintendo Direct, provided for Switch, PC et consoles PlayStation at a date yet to be determined.
