Night of Urban Violence in Hérault: Shops Devastated and Law Enforcement Targeted

In the night of June 30 to July 1 several towns in the department of Hérault, mainly Montpellier and Béziers, were still the site of numerous urban violence, for the second consecutive night. The prefect delivers a report of these nocturnal acts.

The prefecture of L’Hérault lists 3 slightly injured among law enforcement, 12 arrests in total: 10 in Montpellier and 2 in Béziers and significant material damage, especially in many businesses.

In the Montpellier crest, 5 shops were totally devastated and looted by the rioters: the signs ” Orange« , « Dior« , « Montaigne House 34« , « Swarovski » et « Eyewear“. In other districts, fires and burglaries were located, in particular in a tobacco shop in the Saint-Paul shopping center or in a pharmacy. The Mosson post office was destroyed and set on fire. Multiple vehicles and public property were burned and vandalized in Hérault towns.

Violence against law enforcement

The police and gendarmes on the spot were also targeted by the rioters and suffered several cocktails molotovof projectiles divers and have suffered mortar fire. The Mosson police office also suffered numerous mortar fire.

The prefect condemns these acts

Hugues Moutouhprefect of Hérault, strongly condemns this violence and looting, relayed on social networks, which he considers “intolerable”. The prefect affirms that these young people flout the republican order and that their acts are intolerable. He would also like to acknowledge and thank the work of the 180 police and gendarmes as well as firefighters who have been mobilized all night.
