Nigeria with France, Australia, Japan, Serbia and Canada

Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 Nigeria vs France

Winner of the last three editions of the African Nations Championship (2017, 2019, 2021), Nigeria now knows its opponents for the next Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will take place in Australia from September 22 to 1is October 2022. The Lady Tigers are housed in Group B, along with Australia (host country), France, Serbia, Japan and Canada. The draw was made on Thursday in Switzerland.

The only African representative in the final phase of the 2022 Women’s Basketball World Cup, Nigeria did not inherit an easy draw. Indeed, the Lady Tigers will evolve in group B and will cross swords with Australia, the organizing country of this competition, but also winner of the 2006 edition in Brazil and finalist in 2018. They will also have to face France, Serbia, Japan and in Canada.

Quarter-finalists in 2018 and 8th in the general classification, the Nigerians intend to do better during the Australian expedition this year. The Lady Tigers will approach this competition with more certainty, especially after their victory over France (67-65), during the qualifications of this World Cup, last February. Reigning triple African champion (2017, 2019, 2021), Nigeria has the arguments to do better than previous editions, with players like Victoria Macaulay (Bursa), Oderah Chidom (Angers), Adaora Elonu (Nadezhda), Ezinne Josephine Kalu and Ify Ibekwe (Landerneau Brittany).

In group A, we find Belgium, China, Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Korea and the United States, 10 times winners of this competition (a record). With Russia suspended until further notice, after its open war against its neighbor Ukraine, since last Thursday, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) will decide which sixth nation will now complete the group A.

Composition of groups

Group A : Belgium, China, Bosnia, South Korea, USA, Russia (suspended)
