Abuja Nigeria, the largest country in Africa, is considering membership in the G20 confederation of the world’s most important economic powers. This is the result of consultations about the risks and benefits of such membership, a spokesman for President Bola Tinubu said on Sunday.
Tinubu will also attend the upcoming G20 summit in India at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The spokesman said on Friday that Nigeria wanted to attract foreign investment and global capital for infrastructure development there.
With around 211 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh largest country in the world. Measured in terms of economic power, the continent’s largest oil exporter is also at the top of the African states, ahead of South Africa and Egypt. So far, South Africa is the only African member at the G20.
The Nigerian government is increasingly relying on investments instead of loans to improve living conditions. The country is struggling with weak economic development, high national debt, double-digit inflation and shortcomings in the energy supply.
