Nigeria: At least 30 dead from armed attack on a village – 2024-08-10 07:06:06

At least 30 people were killed when gunmen attacked a village in Benue state in central Nigeria, authorities said today.

The Commissioner for Information in Benue State, Matthew Aboh, told newsmen that gunmen launched an attack on Ayati village on Thursday night, killing at least 30 people.

Sewese Anene, a spokesperson for the Benue police directorate, said the attackers were shooting indiscriminately and that the motive for the attack remains unclear.

For years, the people of north-west and central Nigeria have faced jihadists and armed gangs – who loot, kill and kidnap for ransom – as well as bloody conflicts between herdsmen and farmers fighting over increasingly scarce resources, the land and water.
