Against the backdrop of the difficult situation in Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali express their solidarity with the “brother people”. To these ends, the two countries have decided to send a delegation to Niamey.
Mali and Burkina are sending delegations to Niger to “show the solidarity of the two countries to the brotherly people”, the Malian Armed Forces have said.
The delegation will be led by Abdoulaye Maïga, Minister of Territorial Administration and government spokesperson.
Threat of military intervention, according to Niger
Following the overthrow of Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum at the end of July, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) issued an ultimatum to the soldiers who carried out the coup d’état to restore him to office, under penalty of an armed intervention. The ultimatum expired on August 7.
According to ECOWAS, a military operation is “the last option on the table”. However, Niger announced on Sunday the closure of its airspace in the face of a threat of intervention, indicated the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland (CNSP) which overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum.
