Niger. Military leaders suspended all cooperation with the OIF

by Alberto Galvi

Nigerien military leaders have suspended all cooperation with the OIF (International Organization of Francophone Nations), an action which is part of their intentions to progressively sever ties with France. The body, made up of 88 members, has always been used by Paris as a tool to defend French interests.
OIF promotes the French language, supports peace and democracy, and encourages education and development in French-speaking countries around the world, many of which are former French colonies. In Niger, OIF will maintain those programs that directly benefit civilian populations and those contributing to the restoration of democracy.
OIF had already suspended most cooperation with Niger last week due to the coup. The international community, and especially Western countries, unanimously condemned the military overthrow of President-elect Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
The United States, the European Union and France have suspended military cooperation and financial assistance, while ECOWAS has imposed heavy sanctions to encourage a return to civilian rule. The new military leaders have yet to announce the election timetable. The government has not yet decided how long it will hold power.
Niger responded to the European backlash by ending two EU security and defense missions in the country and repealing the law that criminalized migrant smuggling into Europe.
