The ruling military junta in Niger announced Thursday evening the suspension of all activities of international, non-governmental organizations and United Nations agencies in the military “areas of operations” due to the “current security situation”.

“Given the current security situation and the ongoing operational commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Ministry informs international organizations, national and international NGOs and UN agencies present in Niger, that all activities and/or movements in areas of operations are temporarily suspended,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement carried by national radio.

The ministry did not specify the areas concerned by the decision.

It is noteworthy that Niger has been facing for years acts of violence carried out by extremist groups in the southwestern regions adjacent to the borders with Burkina Faso and Mali, and in the southeastern regions near the Lake Chad basin and the border with Nigeria.

The military who overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 cited the “deterioration of the security situation” to justify their coup.

The coup did not prevent the attacks from continuing. On August 15, 17 soldiers were killed in an attack near the border with Burkina Faso.
