Niger Faces International Sanctions and Possible Military Intervention After Coup

The summit was attended by the Presidents of Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, as well as the Foreign Ministers of Cape Verde and Liberia and the High Representative of Sierra Leone in Nigeria and ECOWAS. In addition, an unnamed “representative of President Bazum” was present.

Countries have imposed sanctions on Niger through border closures, flight cancellations, cessation of financial transactions and freezing of national assets. And if in a week the constitutional order in the country is not restored, they are ready to carry out military intervention.

Coup in Niger

On July 26, a coup d’etat took place in Niger – members of the presidential guard blocked access to the residence of Niger President Mohammed Bazum and actually took him hostage.

Two days later, the head of the presidential guard, Abdurrahman Chiani, named himself the new leader of Niger. And on July 30, the French embassy was attacked in Niger – President Emmanuel Macron strongly condemned such actions and promised to respond to them.
