Do you remember Nigel Farage? The former securities speculator was one of the figureheads of the Brexit movement, which had led Britain out of Brussels servitude to the splendid freedom of blue passports and empty supermarket shelves. For Farage, this meant that he lost his lavish salary as an MEP, but what sacrifices does a (at least self-proclaimed) freedom hero not make?
But now Farage is threatened with trouble, as the “Times” reports. Because his bank has announced that it will close all accounts. The reason for this, Farage claimed, were allegations in the House of Commons that he had received around £550,000 as a fee from the Russian propaganda broadcaster RT. And the British also sanctioned it. “I’m starting to think that maybe it’s going to be completely impossible to live in the UK now because of the level of prejudice against me,” Farage lamented.
He sees himself as a victim of “serious political persecution at the highest levels of our system” as “the establishment is trying to evict me from the UK”. Where should Farage’s very personal Brexit lead? Maybe to Moscow. Karin Kneissl, that other world-famous victim of the establishment, has also found political asylum there.
