Before I keep asking you who or what the hell Big Bear is, let’s get right to the point. Big Bear is a shop and parking lot in Hamilton, just across from The Dirty Nil’s old flat. The trio clearly have many fond memories, because as can be inferred from the title, ‘bye bye’ includes a farewell. The store can’t get a finer tribute than a musical ode by the Canadian trio. Following their album fuck the art, released last year, this is the first pinch of new music we hear.
“Bye Bye Big Bear” is, for what we’re used to from them, a rather slow song. Vocalist Luke Bentham puts the necessary passion into the vocal lines, the guitars and percussion sounding rather boring, even bordering on uninspired. Typical swinging rock is not to be found for miles and even as a half ballad we stay hungry here. The band always manage to release new music on a regular basis, but maybe this time they should have taken some time to recharge their batteries.
For five years it was their clubhouse, their pirate ship, their prison. We carry that positive message with us as we say goodbye to Big Bear and hope the next single continues to be true Fuck the art brought the band.
