Niet Pluis: famous Miffy statue hit by municipal sweeper

RTL Nieuws reporter Geert Gordijn happened to pass by the square and saw Miffy lying on the floor between the debris of her pedestal.

“The driver of the sweeper was with shame on his jaws calling his colleagues,” says Gordijn. The statue of Miffy has now been secured by the municipality.

The statue was made by Marc Bruna, the son of Miffy creator Dick Bruna, and was placed in 1994.

The world famous cartoon character is seen as a symbol of Utrecht: in addition to the Miffy Square, Utrecht also has a Miffy Museum and a Miffy traffic light.

It is not the first time this year that an employee of the municipality of Utrecht accidentally destroys a work of art: in April an ‘ecological staircase’ was destroyed by a green employee, who thought he was removing weeds from the stairs. But the vegetation was actually part of the artwork, which cost about 2.5 tons.
