Niels Wittich is the first man to take place in Michael Masi’s former chair. Together with Eduardo Freitas, he forms the brand new duo in the race management and they alternate who is allowed to take a seat on the seat.
During the very first Grand Prix of the season in Bahrain, Wittich will lead the overture in the right direction, according to the FIA site. After a shattered winter, the huge controversy surrounding Masi eventually cost him his head and he was forced to step down in the face of race management renewals announced by new-fangled FIA president Mohamed ben Sulayem.

Changes
In addition to announcing a kind of VAR system as in football and restricting radio communication between teams and competition management, Ben Sulayem also came up with two new competition directors. The pair will alternate the role of race director for the coming season and will be supported by the highly experienced Herbie Blash, former right-hand man of the now deceased Charlie Whiting.

So it’s up to Wittich to open the ball in Bahrain. Wittich gained his experience in the German DTM championship and he has also been active within the FIA for over twenty years. He was also regularly allowed to join the race management at Formula 1 and he can now use that experience on the highest seat.
