A woman from Niederkassel has been the victim of a scam. The 67-year-old transferred a total of 330,000 euros to the account of a man she met through an online dating service.

A 67-year-old woman from Niederkassel fell victim to so-called love or romance scams. From January to December 2022, she transferred around €330,000 before realizing she had been scammed.

It usually starts with a nice email or a quick chat. The perpetrators look for potential victims on online dating sites and social networks such as Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. The invitation to chat is often the starting point. Scammers usually make themselves interesting with an unusual life story and make a serious impression.

Niederkasselerin had met the man through an exchange of partners

The 67-year-old met a man through an online dating service in December 2021. They texted and spoke on the phone. The scammer thus gained his trust. He then led her to believe that he was in financial trouble as a business owner.

The woman has repeatedly transferred money to different Turkish bank accounts. The police advise never to send money to people you haven’t met in person.
