In 2022, Nidwalden will take part in the swearing-in of Swiss guardsmen in the Vatican as a guest canton. For the occasion, the government council asked the district administrator for a loan of 150,000 francs, as the state chancellery announced on Friday.
The Justice Directorate developed a concept for Nidwalden participation in the celebrations. In addition to the official event in the Vatican, various events will take place in 2021.
For the first time, Nidwalden can take part in the swearing-in of Swiss guardsmen as a guest canton. This takes place on May 6th. On that day in 1527, Rome was attacked and sacked by German mercenaries. The Swiss Guard defended the then Pope and made it possible for him to escape to Castel Sant’Angelo. Since then, May 6th has been called “Sacco di Roma” (pillage of Rome).
