It was a bittersweet night for actress Nicole Kidman, who was honoured by the jury at the Venice Film Festival with the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her performance in Babygirl. The Australian did not accept the award, but instead sent it to Halina Rein, the film’s director, on her behalf.
The actress had to leave the Italian city due to the death of her mother, Janelle, as her director in the film read in the speech that Kidman had sent her to read when she went up to collect the award in her place.
“Today I arrived in Venice and shortly after I learned that my beautiful and brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has passed away,” the director read, announcing that the actress had decided to travel to be with her family and say goodbye to her mother.
A fighting woman
Jeanelle Ann Kidman, who died aged 84, was a role model for her daughter, especially when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in the mid-eighties and she saw how she suffered and survived.

Janelle, who in 1985 overcame a battle with breast cancer, inspired the actress to get involved in causes related to women’s health. “This award is for her. She shaped me, guided me and made me who I am. I am beyond grateful to be able to say her name through Halina,” the message read.
