Nicole Gee (23) posted this photo on Instagram: ‘And then there was that explosion…’

Nicole Gee was one of 13 US servicemen killed, in addition to dozens of Afghan dead. The 23-year-old Sacramento maintenance technician had originally wanted to be an air traffic controller, says her father Richard Herrera to the Washington Post. But because she had an irregular heartbeat, she couldn’t. In 2017 she enlisted in the US Army.

Gee’s father had sent her a message a few days before her death, saying he was proud of her. “She was a good person,” he said.

Nicole Gee wrote with the photos which she posted on social media: “I love my job”. The friend and colleague said on Twitter: “And then there was that explosion. And just like that, she’s gone.”

“She breathed her last doing what she loved most: helping people.”

A suicide bomber blew himself up in the crowds and chaos at an airport gate on Thursday. There the American soldiers were busy managing the evacuation of Afghans and others.

The attack was claimed by a local branch of Islamic State (IS). “We are not deterred by terrorists,” said Biden, who was widely criticized.

But above all, there is grief among the bereaved. Like the relatives of the Rylee McCollum, a 20-year-old Marine from Wyoming. He would be a father in a few weeks, his sister Cheyenne McCollum said. “He was so excited about that, and he was going to be a great dad. But he’ll never meet his kid.”

Another sister, Roice McCollum, said to de Casper Star Tribune that her brother had first aired.

The US military released these photos of the killed soldiers:
