Thursday, September 30, French justice sentenced Nicolas Sarkozy to one year in prison for illegal financing of his campaign in 2012. In duplex from the courthouse in Paris, France Télévisions journalist Nathalie Perez recalls that the prosecutor “had asked for six months in prison, but for the president of the court, Nicolas Sarkozy was not in his first presidential campaign. He knew all the ins and outs. Therefore, he could not ignore this cost overrun. He was President of the Republic, she hammered, he had to be irreproachable.”
Nathalie Perez also points out that the “Nicolas Sarkozy’s legal marathon is not over. He will therefore be judged again on appeal for the Bygmalion case and for the wiretapping in 2022.“She adds that the former head of state”is also under indictment, this time over the alleged Libyan funding case for his 2007 campaign.“
