Nicolás Maduro launched a new series of insults against the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, during an “anti-fascist” congress in Caracas on Wednesday. In his speech, Maduro invoked the late footballer Diego Armando Maradona, known for his closeness to Chavismo, to “scare” the Argentine president and keep him from sleeping.
“Diego, can I ask you something? Pull Milei’s legs (scare him) when he’s sleeping, show up in the room and ‘pull’ his legs, Diego!” Maduro said mockingly.
The relationship between the two has been marked by an exchange of insults. Maduro has called Milei a “fascist,” a “Nazi” and a “mistake of history,” while the Argentine president, who does not recognize Maduro’s reelection, has called him a “dictator” and an “impoverishing socialist.”
“Here is Diego with us, the Diego of the people, how much we need Diego to tell Milei his four truths,” Maduro remarked, seeing a poster with the face of the Argentine soccer star in the audience.
“Do you think it’s a good idea for me to pull his legs?” the Chavista dictator asked the audience. “I don’t want him to sleep, kid, he does so much harm to the people,” he said about the Argentine, whom he again called a “Nazi.”
Maduro also recalled the day Maradona gave him a watch worth more than $30,000. “This is the Hublot watch that Diego gave me at the end of the 2018 campaign. When I wear it, Diego is with me,” he said.
“I put it on today because it brings me luck. Look, this is the Hublot watch that Diego Armando Maradona gave me at the closing of the campaign on Bolívar Avenue in 2018. It was his watch, and when I put on the watch, Diego is with me,” he added.
Last week, the Caribbean dictator also launched his artillery of attacks against the Argentine president.
“The idiot Milei in Argentina is protesting because we brought forward Christmas. What does that have to do with Venezuela?” exclaimed Maduro in response to Milei’s criticism for bringing forward the Christmas festivities to October 1.
“He is making life and Christmas miserable for Argentina and he feels bitter because the people of Venezuela start partying on October 1, the day Christmas starts,” he said ironically.
He also attacked the Argentine administration, mentioning the alleged repression against retirees and criticizing the closure of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo university.
The Venezuelan dictator also made a slip on Wednesday when referring to the closing of the “anti-fascist” congress in Caracas, when he thanked the attendees for participating in what he called “the historic founding congress of the fascist international.”
The lapse occurred during the event attended by delegates from 95 countries. Despite the fact that the meeting was aimed at rejecting fascism, Maduro confused the name of the event, causing surprise among those present.
The mistake immediately went viral on social media, adding to the criticism that the Chavista leader regularly receives.
