Nico Koch returns to Marburg as a master

On October 12, 2019, Nico Koch became German champion with the New York Lions at the German Bowl in Frankfurt in front of over 20,000 spectators. Now the 1.92 meter tall and 123 kilogram defense line player is returning to the Marburg Mercenaries.

With him, the Marburg already have two reigning German champions in the squad, quarterback Sonny Weishaupt was Koch’s teammate with the Lions in 2019.

In the failed 2020 season, Koch signed with the Paderborn Dolphins, where he already played in 2012 – 2013 and 2016 – 2017. In the meantime, he was a paratrooper in the barracks in Seedorf. There are 11 companies in the 11 parachute regiment with 2,500 soldiers and employees.

After that, Koch went to Marburg for the first time in 2018. Due to his good performance there, the Lions quickly noticed him and brought him to Braunschweig for the 2019 season.

In addition to American football, the trained locksmith has a great passion for Japanese sports cars from the 80s and 90s. Among other things, he owns a Nissan 300ZxZ32. Otherwise he spends a lot of time in the weight room, which his new head coach and defense coordinator Joe Tricario really appreciates about him: “Koch is a tall, strong player who loves the weight room. He will be the center of our defense line. Nico has a lot of experience and knowledge. I am very happy that I was able to bring him back for the mercenaries“.

These attempts to bring back Tricario and the Marburg team-mates Ruben De Ruyter and Weishaupt were the decisive factor for Marburg, as Koch confirms: “They all worked hard for me and I am very happy to be able to play in defense under Coach Tricario. Marburg has a good mix of very good coaches, many experienced players and young talents. I enjoyed my first year in Marburg very much and only the best memories. “

In 2018, the Mercenaries only narrowly missed the playoffs with fifth place in the GFL1 Group South, which Koch would now like to change in the second attempt: “The clear goal of me and everyone involved is definitely to get into the play-offs. And then anything is possible. “ Koch has already been able to experience and enjoy this himself with the German Bowl title in 2019.
