Last November reggaeton Nicki Jam announced after his presentation at the Latin Grammys his commitment to supporting students aspiring to become professional musicians. It wasn’t mere words, because the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation he announced it together with the Puerto Rican will take care of sponsoring new talents so that they can train musically at the prestigious academy Berklee College of Music from Boston, USA, and who don’t have the resources to do so.
The degree that Nicky Jam will fund is for four years. It’s called the Prodigy Scholarship, but this year it will bear the name of the interpreter as he is the sponsor. This was created eight years ago and grants its beneficiaries financial aid of up to 200,000 dollars. In previous years the scholarship has been co-sponsored by artists such as Juanes (2021), Emilio and Gloria Estefan (2019), Carlos Vives (2018) and Juan Luis Guerra (2016).
Starting this Friday, the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation will be accepting applications for all scholarships from applicants to enter Berklee College in 2023. Along with Nicky Jam, also the executive director of his production company La Industria Inc., Juan Diego Medina, has decided to join and contribute to the sponsorship of one of the Talent Scholarships, worth about 100 thousand dollars.
When making a pledge to support new aspiring musicians at the Latin Grammys, Nicky Jam said:
“Music has always been there for me; it was the momentum that got me through the hardest times of my life (…) By offering the Prodigy Scholarship with the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, I have the opportunity to share my passion for music and help the next generation of Latin music creators in their efforts to make their dreams come true”
A total of 43 scholarships are available to music students aged 17-25 who wish to pursue a degree:
– Three (3) tuition talent scholarships up to $100,000 each. They will be awarded to students for the cost of a four-year music degree starting in the fall of 2023 at the university of their choice.
– Forty (40) tuition assistance scholarships up to $10,000. Each will be awarded to students pursuing a music degree. This scholarship is awarded once to each student to cover tuition fees for one year (valid for the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters).
Each year, the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation Scholarship Committee carefully evaluates applications from aspiring professional musicians, verifying their ability and meeting certain academic and artistic requirements. To date, the foundation has awarded more than $7.6 million in scholarships, grants and musical instrument donations through its educational programs and events around the world.
