Nicky Jam: “Reggaeton is art music to listen and enjoy”

Madrid.- After many years dedicated to music, Nicky Jam continues to put his songs on the charts, and that is what he intends now with his new single “Ojos Rojos”, a melodic reggaeton song that cries out against toxic love , something that draws attention, since the lyrics of these songs “usually indicate the opposite”.

“There is music for everything, yes there are macho and heavy lyrics, but that’s what I’m telling you, there’s a little bit of everything. The music that we make is the best because we have no filter and that is why they are as successful as they are, reggaeton does not have to follow any type of pattern and that is why it is art music to listen to, enjoy and have a good time,” he tells EFE the singer.

The 41-year-old singer is one of the greatest exponents of Puerto Rican reggaeton. Born in Massachusetts, of a Puerto Rican father and a Dominican mother, Nick Rivera -his real name- paved the way for the genre that is so popular today at the time of artists like Daddy Yankee, Don Omar and Ivy Queen, with hits like “Travesuras” (2014) , “I’m going to drink” (2014) or “Until dawn” (2017).

VARIETY OF STYLES

In “Ojos Rojos” – produced by The Panda Bear Show & Willy Rodríguez- Nicky sings to a girl who is going through a bad time in her relationship, which makes her cry constantly, which is why she ends up with red eyes. In the video, shot in Madrid, the artist appears in a mansion singing to the woman he wants from her and trying to convince her to leave that bad relationship that torments him.

“Why are you still with that asshole? He’s not your owner, he shouldn’t boss you around/ “How much longer are you going to put up with that bastard?” narrates the artist, giving a more than important message. “It’s a daily issue, which talks about toxic relationships, which is something that happens a lot on a day-to-day basis anywhere and more with social networks,” he points out.

This song is the advance of his next album, the seventh of his musical career, which he hopes will be released this year. He can only advance that he has four songs already done (when he finishes the tour of the United States he will do the rest), but he will have a total of eleven or twelve and each one of them will have a different style.

“The album is going to have different colors, I don’t like to get stuck in a corner and not get out of there, but rather there is a variety. There will be heavy reggaeton, another more ‘light’, another similar to what Rauw Alejandro did with ‘Todo de ti’, that is, I have everything, I never limit myself when it comes to composing an album”, he advances.

Meanwhile, the artist is preparing for a concert tour that will take him to various Spanish cities between July and August.

MORE THAN MUSIC

However, the Puerto Rican is not limited to the music industry. This year he has opened a bakery in Miami, La Industria Bakery & Café, and plans to open another in Colombia. He is awaiting the release of a film with Kevin Hart and confesses that he would like to be a film director. More than a singer to use, Nicky seeks to be a businessman who does reggaeton.

With experience in the audiovisual field, he not only has his own documentary, “The Winner” (Netflix), he also voiced the character of Butch in the recent animated film “Tom and Jerry”, he has his own talk show, ” The Rockstar Show”, which is already in its second season and declares that he is in the middle of writing a movie.

“I would like to direct a drama, whether real or fictional, I like action and comedy, but I like the world of drama much more,” he details, and then confesses that “set to dream”, he would like to direct Benicio del Toro, Daniel Day-Lewis or Denzel Washington.
