LONDON – Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios withdrew from Wimbledon on Sunday due to wrist problems. Last year’s finalist of this Grand Slam tournament announced it the day before its start.

“I’m really sorry to have to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon,” Kyrgios’ words were quoted by the AFP agency. The injury occurred during the preparation for last week’s tournament in Majorca, where he did not play in the end.

In addition, he spent the whole year recovering from knee surgery – he missed the home Australian Open and Roland Garros and started only at the tournament in Stuttgart, where he was eliminated in the first round. He lost to China’s Wu I-ping, his only fight since being injured in January.

Prevent’s inspection revealed a huge problem

“I did my best to be ready after the operation and to be able to come to Wimbledon again. I had pain in my wrist during the return. The preventive examination showed a torn ligament,” described Kyrgios’ problems.

He then added: “I will be back, as always. I appreciate the support from my fans.”

At Wimbledon, he was scheduled to play in the first round on Monday against wild card holder David Goffin from Belgium. In the initial phase, he will be replaced by a lucky loser from the qualification.

Run onto the court and play against Djokovic

Kyrgios said his quest to regain fitness and battle to return to the competitive courts had been “brutal”. “I didn’t miss tennis that much. I was actually a bit worried about coming back, but it’s my job,” said the 30th-ranked player in the world, who lost to Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in four sets in the dramatic Wimbledon final last year. He will miss his third Grand Slam tournament this year due to health problems.

At the same time, Kyrgios assured everyone until the last moment that he was ready for Wimbledon and that he would be able to play in terms of health. However, just before the start of the tournament, he admitted that he was worried about whether his body would be able to handle the demanding five-set matches after such a long break:

“I have the impression that people who are not involved in the world of tennis do not understand this at all. They think that tennis is not a contact sport, it is not so physical and therefore there are no major injuries. I urge them to run out onto the court and they played against Novak for four hours. Then we’ll see how they feel afterwards…”
