Apart from a brief appearance in Stuttgart last year, Kyrgios has not been on the tennis stage since 2022. A wrist injury coupled with a knee injury at the start of 2023 kept the Australian on the sidelines for a long time. Now the polarizing Australian returns. Yesterday, the 29-year-old announced on his personal Instagram account that he would be playing at the UTS event in New York next week. “I would like to inform anyone who follows UTS or is a tennis fan out there that I will be competing at Forest Hills Stadium in New York on August 22nd,” Kyrgios said in a message video on his social media account. “I know it took a long time. But my body is finally ready to go out there and have fun again,” continued Casper Ruud “We’ll see if I can keep up with the best players in the world,” said the defending champion, “don’t be too hard on me.”
The UTS event, which will take place between August 22 and August 23, is the second stage of this year’s UTS tour, following the first tournament in February in Oslo, which was won by Andrey Rublev.
The Australian left it uncertain whether this was the starting point for a full return to the ATP tour. The only thing that is certain is that Kyrgios has been waiting a long time to appear on the tennis stage again and even as a commentator at Wimbledon he could not resist pick up the racket again and train.
