Australian Nick Kyrgios, finalist of the last Wimbledon tournament, announced on Instagram on Tuesday that he would not participate in the Laver Cup (September 23-25).
“No Laver Cup for me this year!!! I just wanted you all to know it, ”said the former world No.13 on the social network, now down to 63rd place.
“I have to spend time with my family and my lovely girlfriend,” justified the 27-year-old Australian, who also gave up playing the singles draw at the ATP 250 tournament in Atlanta (July 25-31). Kyrgios, however, won the doubles with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
In this fifth edition of the Laver Cup, Kyrgios was supposed to join the world team alongside Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime, Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, as well as Americans Taylor Fritz and Jack Sock.
The team coached by the legendary John McEnroe thus loses an essential element, especially since it will leave with an outsider status against the formidable European team composed, among others, of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic.
This exhibition, created in 2017, is organized by the company Team 8 managed by Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick.
The Laver Cup will be broadcast on TVA Sports.
