Nick Foles announces retirement from the NFL

Philadelphia. Nick Foles, who led the Philadelphia Eagles to their only Super Bowl victory in his 11-year NFL career, announced his retirement Thursday. Foles, 35, was selected in the third round of the 2012 draft by the Eagles before playing five seasons with Philadelphia over two stints.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle,” Foles said in a statement released by the team. “This city has always felt like home to me. Philadelphia is a city of true love and it is an honor to wear its jersey.”

Foles’ career peaked when he replaced an injured Carson Wentz at the end of the 2017 regular season and was named Super Bowl MVP after leading the Eagles to a 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots.

In that game he threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns, but he was best known for the “Philly Special” play in the Super Bowl, where he lined up as a receiver for a touchdown.

“Nick Foles always carried himself with class and integrity, demonstrating through his actions on and off the field what it means to be a Philadelphia Eagle,” said team CEO Jeffrey Lurie. “He was the ultimate competitor and an inspiring teammate, a true representative of our city and, of course, a Super Bowl champion.”

Foles was named to the 2013 Pro Bowl after throwing for seven touchdowns in a win over Oakland and held the NFL’s single-season record for touchdowns and interceptions at 27-2.

Foles played for five different teams and his last appearance was on January 1, 2023 with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Eagles will honor Foles at their game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 16.
